Behind the Scenes: A Day in Channapatna

We spent a week with Lakshmi Narayan and her cooperative of women woodworkers in the Toy Town of Karnataka.

The morning air in Channapatna carries the sweet smell of lacquer and fresh-cut wood. At 7 AM, the cooperative workshop buzzes with activity as forty women arrive for their day's work...

The artisans we work with are not just craftspeople — they are custodians of living traditions. Each piece they create carries within it centuries of knowledge, refined through generations of practice and passed down through patient teaching.

When you choose a handcrafted piece, you are not just acquiring an object. You are becoming part of a story that began long before you and will continue long after. You are supporting a family, preserving a craft, and keeping alive a way of making that machines can never replicate.
