Their Story
Moradabad is known as the "Brass City" of India, and Arun Patel is one of its finest artisans. His family has been working with brass since the 16th century, when Mughal patrons first invited craftsmen to the region. Arun specializes in hand-engraving — using small chisels and hammers to create intricate patterns on brass surfaces. A single large vase can take over 200 hours of engraving. "The sound of the hammer on brass is music," he says. "Each strike must be precise. One wrong hit and the piece is ruined." He now exports to over 15 countries but still works from the same courtyard workshop his great-grandfather built.
