Their Story
Rajesh Kumar sits at his handloom for ten hours a day, weaving patterns that take weeks to complete. Each Banarasi silk saree from his workshop contains over 5,000 individual threads, interlaced with real gold and silver zari. His grandfather wove for the royal families of Kashi, and Rajesh carries that legacy forward. The rhythmic clack of his loom is the soundtrack of his neighborhood. "Every thread has a memory," he says. His most complex design — a jaal pattern inspired by the latticework of the Sarnath stupa — took him four months to complete. Rajesh believes that machines can never replicate the soul of hand-woven fabric.
